This is also a time to honor the achievements of our members over the past year. DCFR members Lennie Carter and Charlie Divan have generously offered to host the Anniversary Party at their home. This is a potluck so bring a dish to share. This year, we are offering door prizes (shirts and gift certificates) to current members who attend the party (so remember to renew!)

Join Metropolitan Washington Gaymes, Team DC athletes, artists, performers, cheerleaders, sports supporters, DC City officials, surprise celebrity guests and all your friends for a big gay rally for Washington's chance to bring 12,000 athletes, 80,000 visitors, 15 cultural events and eight days of sports competitions to Washington DC in 2014. DC Mayor Fenty is among the dignitaries confirmed to attend.

The event opens at 7:30. Featuring DJ Rosie (MySpace and Facebook) and music from the DC Different Drummers Marching Band (Facebook) and the Batala Batala Women's Drum Corps.

Plus, a free screening of Hairspray is set to begin at sunset on a giant 20' x 40' outdoor screen.

DC Front Runners invite all out-of-town visitors and DC-area runners and walkers to our club runs and walks. Please join us on Friday, July 3, 10:00 AM at our 23 & P Street meeting point for our special holiday run and walk to kick off the weekend!


We are also holding our regular Saturday morning fun run and walk on July 4. Walkers meet at 9:30 AM (walk) and runners meet at 10:00 AM at 23/P Street. And join us for our Sunday Distance Run (9 AM) on July 5! All are welcome to attend regardless of pace, experience or fitness level.

5K Run for Pride - June 7

Start off your Pride Week by joining Targeting a Dream and DC Front Runners for the second annual 5K Run for Pride on Sunday, June 7. This race will benefit the Just A TAD Scholarship Fund! Come out and run or walk to support future leaders of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community (rain or shine)!!! This is a target race for our 5K training program participants.

The Just a TAD Scholarship Fund provides three $1000 scholarships to student leaders who are members or allies of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.

The 5K run/walk will begin behind the Fitzgerald Tennis Center in Rock Creek Park and proceed on paved roads closed to motor traffic along Morrow and Beach Drive.

As part of DC Front Runners Spring Fling Weekend, we are moving our Saturday morning run and walk meeting place from 23/P Street NW to Union Station. Join us for a great fun walk/run along the National Mall in our beautiful capital city on Saturday, May 16. Walkers meet at 9:30 AM and runners meet at 10 AM for a 3, 4 or 6 mile run. Meet us at the plaza directly in front of Union Station. Afterwards, we will grab a bite to eat and socialize. It’s also our Third Saturday Women’s run/walk. If you’ve wanted to check out our club, here’s the perfect opportunity to run or walk with us! Our Saturday run/walk will return to 23/P Street on May 23.



DC Front Runners Spring Fling 2009 Weekend - May 15-17

We have some great events—ranging from a Front Runners night out to a guided tour of the U.S. Capitol--planned for this year’s Spring Fling. Ice Skating Social with the DC Ice Breakers - Wednesday, April 15

For the second year in a row, DC Front Runners will be joining the DC Ice Breakers social group for a very different way to socialize – an hour of casual ice skating, followed by food, drinks, and conversation at Union Jack's Pub.  It all happens Wednesday, April 15, starting at 8:00 pm.  Skating novices (and spectators) welcome!  The details:

 

WHAT: Casual ice skating at the FULLY ENCLOSED Capitals Iceplex in Ballston, followed by food, drinks and conversation at Union Jack's Pub, with half-price appetizers.

 

WHEN: Wednesday, April 15.  Skating from 8:00 - 9:00 pm, followed by Union Jack's Pub from 9:15 pm - ????

 

WHERE: Capitals Iceplex, on top of the Ballston Common Mall parking garage, 627 N. Glebe Road, Arlington, VA 22203, with plenty of cheap, on-site parking.  It's just 2 short blocks from the Ballston Metro station.  Union Jack's Pub is in the mall, directly below the rink.  For a map and directions, go to www.DCIceBreakers.org  and click on "DIRECTIONS".

 

COST: Skating is just $8, plus $3 skate rental.  There's no charge just to watch.  The social at Union Jack's Pub is "pay as you go".

DC Front Runner Ed Green Featured on NBC4 News

DC Front Runner and National Marathoner Ed Green was featured on NBC4 News.  The March 19 NBC4 newscast included a segment on the March 21, 2009 National Marathon, and featured our own Ed Green in a story about "Inspirational" runners participating in the race.  DC Front Runners is an official running club partner of the 2009 Sun-Trust National Marathon and Half-Marathon.

DC Front Runners Beginner’s 5K Training Program

The DC Front Runners is offering a special nine-week 5K race-training program for beginning runners starting on Saturday, April 4, 2009.


Participants will train to complete their first 5K race. The training program is designed for first-time runners who want to get into shape. The 5K race is Targeting a Dream’s 5K Run for Pride.
 
Participants will meet for consecutive group training sessions on Saturdays, 10 am from April 4 through the end of May. The assembly place for the group is Shevchenko Park, 23rd and P Street NW in Washington’s Dupont Circle neighborhood. DC Front Runner Blake Rushin, a Road Runner Club of America certified running coach and other experienced club members will provide coaching and advice.


By using a run-walk approach, our beginner’s program focuses on completing a race, gaining fitness and establishing a healthy lifestyle through running.
 
There are no minimum speed or fitness requirements to participate in this program. All are welcome to register regardless of age, pace, sexual orientation, or running experience. We are limiting the program to 20 individuals on a first-come, first-serve basis.

 
Participants are asked to join DC Front Runners ($25 annual membership fee) and can register or send questions via e-mail to train@dcfrontrunners.org. Race registration is not included.

“Using Your Mind to Improve Your Running”

DC Front Runners is hosting a series of quarterly informational talks for all members and runners in the community.  The topic of the next talk is “USING YOUR MIND TO IMPROVE YOUR RUNNING” and will be held on Monday, March 9 at Local 16 (1602 U Street NW).  - Please note date change

Reaching your running goals is not just achieved by long runs or sprints - your mind can be a training tool, too. Do you set running goals, but somehow never reach them? I will teach you some goal setting basics to get you started:

·     techniques for enhancing motivation

·     goal-setting exercises to put you in charge of your running plan

·     Strategies for countering inevitable obstacles

The speaker, DCFR’s Blake Rushin is a RRCA certified running coach and has a Master's degree in sport and exercise psychology.

The talks are FREE for members and $5 for non-members.  Bring your friends!


Colonial Williamsburg Half-Marathon Weekend

Winter's no time to put your running shoes away.  Join the DC Front Runners as we head south to Virginia's former capital for the Colonial Half Marathon & 5K, the first circuit race of 2009.  The half marathon starts at 1pm on Sunday Feb. 22 from the College of William and Mary campus.  Register online at http://www.tribeclub.com/events.htm#CHM

For overnight accommodations we recommend the Howard Johnson Inn at 505 York Street (ph: 757-220-3100) or next-door at the Sheraton Four Points 351 York Street (ph: 757-229-4100).  Contact them directly to reserve your room.  There is no DCFR room block this year.

Join us for dinner Saturday night Feb. 21st at the historic Shield's Tavern but seating is limited to the first 20 persons who sign up.   Reserve your space at dinner by sending your email address and a check for $25 made payable to Kevin Lorei, 3144 19th St. NW Washington, DC 20010.  Deadline for the dinner reservation is Feb. 13th.  Expect dinner costs of $45 to $55 per person including beverage, taxes and tip.  

On Sunday morning we breakfast together at a local pancake emporium, followed by registration/packet pickup and the race itself.  If you are not racing, cheer on your teammates as they cross the finish line inside Kaplan Arena.
